Abbott Sues J&J in Patent Dispute Over Humira Competitor

Abbott Biotechnology is suing Centocor Ortho Biotech, a unit of Johnson & Johnson (J&J), over plans to introduce a rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment that would compete with the blockbuster drug Humira. The biotechnology unit of Abbott Laboratories has asked the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts to find Centocor’s Simponi (golimumab) would infringe the ’394 patent covering the tumor necrosis factor inhibitor Humira (adalimumab), which is used to treat RA.
