Pfizer Settles FCPA Charges; Settlement Lessened by Company’s Compliance Steps
Pfizer will pay $60 million to resolve Foreign Corrupt Practices Act charges, but its proactive corporate compliance program allowed it to avoid even harsher penalties — including imposition of an outside corporate monitor. Pfizer subsidiary Pfizer H.C.P. admitted that between 1997 and 2006 it paid more than $2 million in bribes to government officials and hospital administrators in Bulgaria, Croatia, Kazakhstan and Russia that resulted in more than $7 million in profit, according to a two-count criminal information filed in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia by the Justice Department.
