DOE Awards Grants to Create Domestic Supply of Isotope
February 5, 2010
Two grants from the Department of Energy (DOE) may alleviate long-term shortages of a medical isotope commonly used in diagnostics, but suppliers of technetium-99m (Tc-99m) are still looking for short-term solutions. DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration awarded matching grants to Babcock & Wilcox Technical Services Group and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy to develop low-enriched uranium projects to produce molybdenum-99, from which Tc-99m is derived.
