Officials Warn of Furloughs, Grant Cuts If Sequestration Allowed to Occur

Federal agencies, including the FDA and other HHS agencies, will have to consider “wide-ranging” furloughs of hundreds of thousands of employees if across-the-board spending cuts go into effect March 1, Office of Management and Budget Controller Daniel Werfel told lawmakers Thursday. The approximately $85 billion sequester that would be implemented for the remaining seven months of fiscal 2013 would impose effective cuts of nearly 9 percent on non-Defense programs, Werfel said in testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee.
