Health Canada Approves Elekta’s MR-Linac Device for Radiotherapy
Elekta’s Unity system, a device that combines an MRI scanner and linear accelerator, has received a medical device license from Health Canada.
The device combines a high-field MRI scanner with a linear accelerator, allowing it to customize x-rays to fit around a tumor’s shape and spare outside tissue from destruction. It also includes dose replanning software.
The system combines adaptive radiotherapy with real-time monitoring capabilities to enable customized radiotherapy treatment of tumors and real-time visualization.
The company expects to launch the system in Canada later this year if it receives a required service license from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
