U. of Washington Scientists Invent Wearable Device for Opioid Overdoses
Researchers at the University of Washington have developed a device that can automatically deliver naloxone doses to opioid addicts who suffer overdoses.
The wearable injector system measures respiration and apnea associated with an opioid overdose using a pair of on-body sensors and administers naloxone subcutaneously upon detection of a halt in breathing.
In a hospital setting, where the researchers simulated opioid-induced apneas in healthy participants, the device accurately identified the apneas and successfully injected participants with 1.2 mg of naloxone, the research team reported in the journal Nature.
