GRASSLEY, BAUCUS WANT CMS TO INVESTIGATE SPECIALTY HOSPITALS
August 10, 2006
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), and ranking Democrat Max Baucus (D-Mont.), want CMS to collect more information about how specialty hospitals affect local community health care delivery before completing a mandated study for Congress. So far the study, mandated by the Deficit Reduction Act
of 2005 (PubLNo 109-171), and due August 8, 2006, is flawed, said the senators
in a July 28, 2006, letter to CMS. Some of the "competing" hospitals
studied are in states where specialty hospitals are not allowed to operate,
while some traditional hospitals that compete directly with specialty hospitals
have been left out of the survey, they said.
