NEW MALARIA DRUG LAUNCHED IN UGANDA
A new anti-malaria drug, made by Chinese drugmaker Kunming Pharmaceutical, has been introduced in Uganda, reports the Kampala, Uganda-based New Vision.
The drug, Arco, is an artemisinin-based combination therapy containing a fixed single dose of naphthoquine phasphate and artemisinin. A single dose of Arco, administered orally, leads to an almost 100 percent cure rate, according to the New Vision article.
The country's National Drug Authority has approved the drug for people 16 to 60 years of age, but not yet for young children. Children under 5 and pregnant women are the most vulnerable to malaria, the New Vision article says.
Arco is less expensive than Novartis' anti-malaria drug Coartem, reports New Vision. Clinical studies conducted in China, Nigeria, Sudan and Uganda showed Arco caused no adverse side effects.
