Cancer Treatment Firm to be Acquired for $160 Million
Proxima Therapeutics, a privately held Atlanta company that develops cancer treatments, has agreed to be acquired by Cytyc for $160 million. Cytyc, based in Marlborough, Mass., designs and makes women's healthcare products. Alpharetta-based Proxima's leading product is the MammoSite Radiation Therapy System for the treatment of breast cancer. Since its clearance by the FDA in 2002, MammoSite has been used to treat more than 7,000 breast cancer patients, according to the company. In addition to MammoSite, Proxima markets the GliaSite RTS, a site-specific radiation treatment for brain tumors.
