MARTIN MEMORIAL TESTS NEW BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSTIC SCANNER
April 25, 2006
Martin Memorial Health Systems is one of eight hospitals in the United States and Canada testing a new breast cancer diagnostic scanner, hospital officials announced Monday. The SoftScan Optical Breast Imaging System uses lasers to determine whether abnormal breast tissue first detected with a mammogram is cancerous. Lumps are guilty until proven innocent, but most abnormalities found with mammography turn out not to be cancer, said Debbie Lewandowski, director of oncology at Martin Memorials Bob and Carol Weisman Cancer Center.
