New Computer Model Simulations Could Make Drug Trials Safer

May 14, 2010
The FDA’s new supercomputer, scheduled to come online this summer, could improve the safety of drug trials by better identifying subjects who should be excluded. The high-performance computer is the final piece of a $2 million initiative to improve the agency’s science and technology. Once the computer is installed, agency scientists will be able to identify, “in silico,” which individuals should not be exposed to certain molecules and thus excluded from specific drug trials, Brian Fitzgerald, deputy director of the FDA’s Division of Electrical and Software Engineering, said.
