FDA to Study Causes of Metal-on-Metal Hip Failures

August 5, 2013
The FDA is commissioning a study of corrosion in total hip replacements and any potential link to clinical outcomes. The agency plans to use the results to develop test methodologies and special controls for preclinical studies of total hip implants. Citing a “renewed concern of wear and corrosion of conical head/stem taper junctions in modern modular total hip replacements,” the FDA is seeking quotes from contractors to conduct the study via the Federal Business Opportunities website.
