Varian Expands Operations in Salt Lake City

January 13, 2014

Varian Medical Systems is expanding operations at its X-ray products manufacturing headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. The company makes X-ray tubes and digital imaging detectors for treating cancer and other medical conditions, as well as X-ray imaging products for cargo screening and industrial inspections.

The expansion will increase Varian’s 341,000-square-foot facility by 120,000 feet, with at least some of that space dedicated to flat panel image detectors and X-ray tube product lines. The additional space will also contain cleanrooms, R&D labs, extra manufacturing areas and administrative offices.

The expansion is expected to result in 1,000 new jobs over a 15-year period.

The governor’s Office of Economic Development has approved a $7.1 million tax credit to be paid out incrementally over the period as Varian meets criteria in its contract with the state. The incentive is in more than $35 million in new state tax revenues and $400 million in new state wages the expansion is expected to create.

Varian is one of Utah’s largest exporters, shipping about 70 percent of orders for X-ray products to non-U.S. customers, said CEO Dow Wilson. — Lena Freund
