Bio-Rad Acquires GnuBIO

April 11, 2014

Clinical diagnostic products company Bio-Rad said Thursday it has acquired Cambridge, Mass.-based GnuBIO, a developer of DNA assays.

GnuBIO currently is developing a faster and fully integrated droplet-based DNA sequencing technology that is compatible with Bio-Rad’s work in droplet digital polymerase chain reactions.  The aim is to consolidate all areas of sequencing into a single integrated workflow for medical diagnosticians and researchers in just hours, instead of days.

According to GnuBio, the technology allows users to load genomic DNA into the system and perform everything from sample enrichment to real-time informatics. The device’s user interface and endpoints are application-specific, which eliminates the need to perform complicated computations.

Bio-Rad manufactures and distributes a range of imaging, PCR amplification, cell counting, chromatography and clinical testing products to universities, hospitals, research centers and public and commercial laboratories. — Lena Freund
