DEA Says Opioid Production Should Be Cut Substantially in 2020
September 23, 2019
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has recommended that production of five prominent opioids be cut significantly next year to lower risks of diversion and misuse.
The proposal calls for production cuts for oxycodone by nine percent, hydrocodone by 19 percent, hydromorphone by 25 percent, fentanyl by 31 percent, and oxymorphone by 55 percent.
Drugmakers must legally comply with the DEA’s Aggregate Production Quota, which takes into account the national need for the five substances. The agency will allocate individual manufacturing and procurement quotas to manufacturers that apply for them.
