Spain Locks in 31.5 Million Doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 Vaccine

October 21, 2020

The Spanish government announced that it has authorized the purchase of 31.5 million doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine.

Spain will pay an estimated $90 million upon delivery of the doses, which will occur between December and June 2021. The acquisition is part of a larger deal negotiated by the European Commission that netted EU member states a total of 300 million doses of the vaccine candidate for approximately $1 billion.

Because immunization with the vaccine requires two doses, the country will now be able to vaccinate approximately 15.75 million patients with the stock of AZD1222. Spain has a population of almost 47 million.
