U.S. Secures 100 Million More Doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna Vaccines

The U.S. government has purchased 100 million additional doses of both the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna messenger RNA (mRNA)-based COVID-19 vaccines in an effort by the Biden administration to ramp up inoculations.

With the new orders, the government has bumped up its total number of doses purchased from the two drugmakers to 600 million. The U.S. is on track to have enough supply to inoculate 300 million Americans by the end of July, according to President Biden, who spoke in a media briefing yesterday.

Moderna said that it expects to deliver the additional supply of doses before the end of July and continues to scale up its manufacturing in the U.S. and abroad. Pfizer did not comment on its new supply commitment.

As of Feb. 11, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that nearly 68.3 million vaccine doses have been delivered so far. Approximately 34.7 million citizens have been vaccinated with their first dose, while nearly 11.2 million Americans have received a full two-dose regimen to date. — James Miessler
