Drug Price Trends Outpace Inflation, HHS Says

October 6, 2022

Prescription drug prices from 2016 to 2022 outpaced inflation, HHS said in a report on the affordability challenges posed by increases in prescription drug pricing.

From July 2021 to July 2022, when the rate of inflation was 8.5 percent, there were 1,216 products with an average price increase of 31.6 percent, HHS reported.

Among the drugs cited were the generic fungal treatment fluconazole, with an 1100 percent increase in price (from about $2 to between $26 and $28) and lisinopril, a generic drug that treats high blood pressure, with a 539 percent increase in price (from $20 to $129).
