FDA Allows Pharmacies to Dispense Mifeprex and Mifepristone
January 5, 2023
The FDA has changed its rule to allow pharmacies to dispense Danco Laboratories’ Mifeprex (mifepristone) and GenBioPro’s generic mifepristone tablets, removing the requirement that the abortion drug be dispensed in person by a healthcare provider.
Mifepristone blocks the hormones needed to sustain a pregnancy and misoprostol causes contractions. The drugs can be administered through the tenth week of pregnancy and still require a prescription from a healthcare provider.
The drugs can also be mailed to patients by pharmacies certified in the FDA’s Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program, using a shipping service that provides tracking information, the FDA said.
