FDA Recommends Updated Safety Labeling for OTC Contact Lens Care Products

July 28, 2023

Helping consumers avoid adverse events from improper use of hydrogen peroxide-based contact lens care products (HPCP) by improving labeling is the aim of a final guidance the FDA released Wednesday.

The agency says consumers have reported adverse events ranging from irritation to severe burning and stinging — and even blindness — from using HPCPs, and it appears that having packaging not easily distinguishable from other lens care products has likely resulted in improper use.

The 27-page guidance recommends improvements and “clear messaging in terms of warnings and instructions for use” in the labeling provided with the product.
