Nine Drugs From Pfizer Rocky Mount Plant on Emergency Order to Stem Shortages

August 9, 2023

Following recent tornado damage to its Rocky Mount, N.C., manufacturing facility, Pfizer sent its customers a letter with emergency ordering procedures to manage inventory for 12 formulations of nine drugs.

The additional steps are being made “out of an abundance of caution … on a small subset of Rocky Mount presentations due to their high medical need,” Pfizer said in a letter to customers. The formulations will be available via direct shipment from Pfizer only, effective immediately and until further notice.

The nine injectable drugs on the emergency order list are: sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, copper (cupric chloride), dextrose, dobutamine, dopamine hydrochloride, potassium acetate, sodium acetate and vitamin K1 neonate (phytonadione emulsion).

Pfizer noted that there is still inventory for many of the products, and asked customers to check availability through their wholesaler before using the emergency ordering process through their Pfizer hospital representative.
