Axonics Wins Appeals Court Ruling in Ongoing Medtronic Patent Dispute

A federal appeals court handed another win to Axonics in its ongoing battle with Medtronic over claims that Medtronic’s patents for a sacral-nerve stimulation device are invalid.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said Monday that the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) erred in its judgment in two inter partes review determinations affecting the validity of Medtronic patents.

The decision marks the second time in weeks that the appeals court has rejected PTAB’s reasoning on Medtronic sacral-nerve stimulation patents in favor of Axonics.

In July, the court said that the board used incorrect legal framing and conducted an erroneous obviousness analysis in its opinion assessing separate but related Medtronic patents.
