Canada, PhRMA Pan FDA’s Approval of Florida Plan to Import Drugs From Canada

January 26, 2024

The Canadian government is not happy with the FDA’s decision to allow the state of Florida to import certain Canadian prescription drugs in bulk, and neither is the powerful U.S. pharmaceutical industry trade group PhRMA.

Canadian Minister of Health Mark Holland said on Canadian Broadcasting Corp., “There is no way we will allow any jurisdiction, be it a state or another foreign jurisdiction, to endanger the Canadian drug supply… We’re going to do everything in our power to make sure that another country cannot be given the ability to pillage our health system for its own benefit.”

Meanwhile, PhRMA called the move by the FDA a “reckless decision” that comes with “life-threatening consequences” for Americans. “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the gold standard when it comes to reviewing and approving drugs,” wrote PhRMA in a statement. “Medicines that enter the United States through importation will not be subject to these same strong standards and, as a result, counterfeit, substandard or diverted, repackaged and adulterated drugs could be introduced into our secure drug supply chain.”
