Conservatives, Women, Rural Residents, Least Likely to Trust FDA, Survey Says

May 23, 2024

The FDA has a lot of work to do to regain trust among a wide swath of demographic groups — starting with women — according to a recent survey.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the University of Colorado Medical School reached out to 2,021 respondents probing their level of trust toward the FDA. The survey focused on competence and effectiveness, commitment to acting in the best interests of the American public, abiding by the rules and regulations set forth by policy or law and expertise in health, science and medicine.

Building trust in public health agencies “has become a key priority” to promote patient adherence to medical treatments. Studies have found, the authors state, that “lower levels of trust in government officials have been associated with lower levels of vaccination against H1N1 influenza and COVID-19,” leading FDA Commissioner Robert Califf to make building public trust a top policy goal.
