WHO DONATES ANTI-MALARIA DRUGS TO LIBERIA

August 23, 2006

The World Health Organization (WHO) has donated a consignment of 155,000 courses of the newly approved atemisinin-based combination therapy to Liberia's Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for malaria treatment.

This type of anti-malaria drug is now the recommended treatment for malaria throughout the world. According to the WHO, malaria kills more than 1 million people each year.

The health minister said that the drugs would be sent to the National Drug Service to be distributed to malaria treatment centers throughout the country, where staff have been trained in the usage of the new treatment.

The drugs will be provided to malaria patients free of charge, and the Liberian government has warned that the Ministry of Health will punish anyone who attempts to sell or commercialize the drugs for personal gain.
