ALTANA OPENS RESEARCH FACILITY IN INDIA

October 3, 2006

Altana Pharma has opened its new Institute for Chemical and Clinical Research in Mumbai, India. The Germany-based drugmaker has invested approximately 10 million euros in the new site.

"We chose India because it has a huge potential for innovation and is already a top player in the pharmaceutical sector," said Ulrich Thibaut, a member of the Altana's board. "Given this strategic relevance we expect our site in Mumbai to make a significant contribution to our international research operations."

"The Mumbai region features top academic institutions and a highly qualified workforce," said Antal Hajos, managing director of the new institute.

Altana has been present in India since 2001 and has been conducting clinical studies there in compliance with international ethical and scientific standards even before they were mandatory in the country, according to the company. Altana also has a production facility, which is part of a joint venture between Altana and Zydus Cadila, in Mumbai.
