GSK Indian Affiliate Could Agree to New Marketing Deals

February 16, 2005

An Indian affiliate of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), 49.2 percent owned by the UK-based drug major, has announced it will offer joint marketing deals to Western entrants, as the multinational sector interest in India continues to build. The company has confirmed that it will seek to licence drugs in gynaecology, gastroenterology and nutrition.

Meanwhile, the company is also studying new acquisitions ahead of an expected consolidation in the sector, and could move to boost its parent's interest in the company to a majority stake. The GSK group is already a leader in India, with an overall market share of some 10 percent. The parent company recently completed a buyback plan for its nutritionals business, GSK Consumer Healthcare.
