UK's Beckpharma to Collaborate on Cuban Pharma

February 18, 2005

UK-based pharmaceuticals technology transfer company Beckpharma has announced a new model for collaborations with research institutes in Cuba. The project, which is being operated in conjunction with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, will allow revenue from commercially viable products to be shared and returned to Cuban institutions.

Beckpharma claims to have studied erythropoietin, interferons and similar compounds for possible generic production and marketing. The company also reports that many of the substances it is currently examining are already in general use in Cuba, apparently with no negative side effects. To date, five letters of intent have been signed with Cuban research institutes, and the company will seek immediate registration for nine of 30 products it has so far reviewed.
