JAPAN'S CHUGAI REPORTS 1ST HALF EARNINGS

Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. (4519.TO) said Thursday its group net profit more than doubled in the six months ended in June, lifted by strong sales of its influenza remedy and cost reductions. The Japanese unit of Roche Holdings AG (RHHBY) said its group net profit jumped to Y28.0 billion for its fiscal first half from Y13.8 billion in the same period last year. The Tokyo-based company's group operating profit surged 79% to Y39.9 billion from Y22.3 billion. Its group sales rose 12% to Y159.2 billion from Y142.0 billion.
