PHARMACEUTICAL UNITS FACE CLOSURE

Of the 1,200 pharmaceutical units in the State, over 300 units are likely to face closure. These units account for 45 per cent of pharmaceutical production in the country. A recent crackdown on the units by the Food and Drug Control Adminstration (FDCA) revealed that many units had failed to upgrade its manufacturing infrastructure as per Schedule 'M' enacted by the Union Health Ministry in 2003. The FDCA Commissioner has already served closure notice on scores of pharmaceutical units in the State.
