UK RESEARCHERS REPORT CANCER GENE PROGRESS

August 9, 2005

Researchers at UK-based charity Cancer Research UK have used a state-of-the-art DNA test to identify four new genes likely to be involved in the development of breast cancer. The majority of breast cancers are caused by damage to genes acquired during a patient's lifetime, according to Cancer Research UK.

However, scientists have only discovered a few of the genes responsible. The new test has allowed scientists to pinpoint which genes, out of hundreds studied, are most likely to develop into tumors. The discovery is expected to have a significant impact on the current understanding of breast cancer and could eventually lead to the development of new treatments.
