In his blog, Robert Goldberg discusses follow-on biologics, calling them "a matter of when not if."

"A look at the good science a company like Momenta Pharmaceuticals is undertaking to improve characterization of complex proteins and their analogues underscores that follow-on products are years in the making and will not be the function of just handing over data," he writes. "But because the spinmeisters and staff approach the biological sciences — deliberately at times — with the neuronal sophistication of single-cell oceanic life forms — it looks like producing follow-on biologics (and milking money to pay for social programs) should be as easy as tapping a keg at a Moveon.org fundraiser."
