RWANDAN OFFICIALS ANNOUNCE LAST YEAR'S ARV NUMBERS

January 18, 2007

According to Rwanda's Ministry of Health, the country was able to supply approximately 3,200 people with antiretroviral (ARV) drugs in 2006, representing 1.6 percent of the people who needed the medication, local newspaper The New Times reports.

The director of the health ministry's Treatment and Research AIDS Center (TRAC) told the news agencies that 200,000 HIV-positive Rwandans still need ARVs. Official government statistics indicate that 3 percent of the population has HIV, according to the newspaper.

"About 60 percent of HIV positive people who need urgent medication were able to access ARVs by last year," the TRAC director said, adding, "There are enough ARVs in the country and there is no worry running out of stock."
